Psychological Classification:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Definition:
One which has experienced traumatic event such as,
witnessing actual or threatened death or serious injury,
threat of physical integrity of self or others; and responding
in intense fear, horror or helplessness.
Symptoms:
a) Persistent re-experienced of traumatic event through
DREAMS, THOUGHTS and INTRUSIVE DISTRESS
of recollections of the event.
b) Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with trauma.
(not present before trauma) Requires 3 or more of the following:
- Avoid thoughts, feelings or conversation related to trauma.
- Avoid activities, places or people that arouse recollections.
- Inability to recall an important aspect of trauma.
- Lost interest/participation in significant activities.
- Feelings of detachment or estrangement from others.
- Restricted range of affect (e.g, unable to have loving feelings)
- Sense of foreshortened future. (e.g, feels no future for self)
c) Persistent symptoms of increased arousal (absent before trauma)
Requires 2 or more of the following:
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep.
- Irritability or outburst of anger.
- Difficulty concentrating.
- Exaggerated startle response.
d) Duration of disturbance is more than 1 month.
e) Disturbance causes clinically significant distress, social impairment,
occupational impairment, or other important areas of functioning.
Vulnerable Targets:
Firemen, Police Forces, Soldiers, Psychologists that have
frequent exposure to traumas or deaths on others.
Outcome if fail to provide treatment:
Proceed to major depressive disorder, suicidal actions.
